Healthy Misconceptions :

Q: Doctor, I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it…  don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually.  Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster.  Want to live longer?  Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies.  What does a cow eat?   Hay and corn.   And what are these?  Vegetables.  So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system.   Need grain?   Eat chicken.   Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable).

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A:  No, not at all.  Wine is made from fruit.  Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way.   Beer is also made out of grain.  Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one.  If you have two bodies, your  ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry.  My philosophy is: No Pain…Good!

Q:  Aren’t fried foods bad for you?
A:  YOU’RE NOT LISTENING! !! …..  Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil.  In fact, they’re permeated in it.  How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q:  Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q:  Is chocolate bad for me?
A:  Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It’s the best feel-good food around!

Q:  Is swimming good for your figure?
A:  If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q:  Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A:  Hey!  ‘Round’ is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And  remember:
‘Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways – Chardonnay in one hand – chocolate in the other – body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ‘WOO HOO, What a Ride’

AND…..

For those of you who watch what you eat, here’s the final word on nutrition and health. It’s a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

A birthday gift ~ book fan

There are people who indulge in chocolate binging or cookies or even ice cream, when they have an anxiety attack or depression. In my case, I use it to as an excuse to shop !! Oh yeah, but I’m sensible, I would almost never spend on clothes and stuff, my spending is limited to craft supplies or books or decoration or stuff like that .. art related.  (which in truth is as bad if not worse !! )

For almost the past two weeks, We have been confined to the house with studies and more studies, it seems life has almost seized to exist apart from that chore. So yesterday, I took the kids to this huge book fair at the Dubai Airport Expo ! Lo and behold, the place was a books paradise. Books on just about everything and most importantly “C R A F T S !!  Which is somehow difficult to find in Dubai.  Books on rubberstamping, glass painting , collage, mosiac, quilling etc. Very rarely, do we Oh, I could’nt believe my eyes. We completly got lost in the mountains of books on discounted prices. Perhaps I did go a wee bit overboard … OK So I admit, I went completly bonkers !!! I went greedy and selfish and drooled all the way !!!!!!!  Hey wait a minute, but I did buy the kids two books each ! Ok so they had to haggle with me a whole lot to get it till there. But what was I expecting, I’ll take the boys to a books paradise and they will come away without requesting (crying, being stubborn and may be even threatening ) for even one book ??

In the end we had 29 books and paid a load !!

And inspite of all the gloom and doom I felt till last morning, I realized I was feeling much better, but a little guilty  when I started unpacking my precious treasures after the shopping.   Already I saw so many projects, which I am just ready to hit out at. Oh but ofcourse, am just going to wait for Bilal’s exams to get over first.

I suppose it is like therapy.  Anyways, so I decided to call it MY Birthday Present. From me to me. Its another thing that my birthday’s atleast 2 months ahead ! And perhaps till then there will be quite a few crafty tools that would get into that list of ” Birthday Gift from Me to Me ”

A poem for my children.

There are some times in life when we find ourselves rather helpless. We want the best for those we love, yet destiny has a different story laid out for us. I stand at cross roads having to decide such critical decisions. I am not certain what the reperussions would be on my boys.

In my confusion and despair, I felt inspired to pen my thoughts, before I knew it, it took shape of a poem. Its nearly after 20 years that I felt the pain to write a poem today. pain, coz I am one of those people who are inspire to write when hurt and create when happy.  Actually its less a poem but my wish, my hope, my prayer for my boys. A mother is the backbone of a family and she constantly has to remain strong. Sometimes I find myself drifting from my hopes and it scares me.

This poem is for my sons who are bonded for better or worse times, but struggle every single day to fight in this very perfect world.

  They are all dyslexic.

My darling Son,

You are unique,

You are special,

You are capable of everything under the sun.

In everything you see, feel and show

You are clear yet unsure

My precious one, you will always have me beside you,

We will be brave and fight it thru

Darling son, don’t ever let them change you

For your disability is not a failure in you,

I know, struggle will always be your best friend

But better that, than silly boys to tend

Sensitive as you are

Mocked as you are

Believe in yourself, believe in me

At your feet, this world will be

Let your imagination soar

Let your creativity find its core

Your world is so much more beautiful

While ours full of  mean and ridicule

You have to climb these biased mountains

No one else but you should be certain

You are special

You are gifted

You are God’s own chosen one

Use it to bring comfort to others

Use to show kindness to other brothers

I feel miserable when I see you lonely in your class

Then I feel perhaps its coz you are a class apart !

Don’t join the flock to be one of them

Make instead your own path

Believe that you have been sent down to fulfill a purpose

Be happy, be grateful, we have one another

It may seem difficult today but the road does go further

I am with you today in body

Tomorrow in spirit and perhaps

Another day only but in your prayers

Whenever where ever you are,

Remember God’s chosen one, you are

Creative Recycling.

One of my part-time helper (maid)  almost 3 – 4 years back worked for Welcare hospital in Dubai.  She was a young, educated and very tall for a Philipino female.  She worked for the housekeeping department and as such, I had given her some brief lessons on how and what could and should be recycled.  For health and hygiene reasons, I do NOT encourage alot many things to be recyled in hospitals.  However, we finally got a hold of these white cardboards that paper napkins are packed in. Once the tissue is place in the toilets, naturally the cardstock is disposed. I asked her to collect these which was really easy coz they would easily flatten out once the tissue was out.

Its amazing how much and how many ways, one can save in,  provided he puts-in that extra effort.  She managed to get atleast 50 to 60 every fortnight, which was great.

The first birthday that we actually celebrated for Bilal was a dinosaur themed one. He was in Grade 1 at the School of Research Science.  For  Games, room decoration, give aways, Invitation cards, everything possible  related to that birthday had in someway or the other, used those cardstocks.

It is such a shame that I dont have photos for that particular birthday !!! I had three little boys below the age of 4 and not anyone to help out with that preparation. Infact in the birthday too, I WAS the only adult for almost 15 kids !!  Hubby took care of little Eman who was too tiny, while mama did just about everything. That was probably the last party I did for the boys ! It was a blast and I think, the sucess of that party prompted many more private parties being organized.

Just so that you could understand what the give way box would look slightly like, I made one last night. Ofcourse those all had different elements of the theme and this one is a plain and simple one.

Recycled Art to inspire.

I’m one of those compulsive “junk hoarders” who believes there’s a use to everything created.  Hence the two sheds, remember 🙂   A couple of weeks back I spotted this really cool lamp shade thrown away at one of my neigbours.. Oh yes, you will be amazed at the kinda stuff that is ridicously dumped in Dubai. I have unbelievably seen things without a scratch thrashed out !!!!  And for someone who is a firm believer in recyling, it breaks my heart. Why not just dump it in the recycling bin instead of the garbage ?  I really feel its a crime, when you see, scores of people in the world without even the basic essentials, and here people shamelessly dump good usable, non expired stuff – why ? Beats me !! I guess we are all alittle spoilt and maybe some of us have had their 2-day-fill of what ever MUST-HAVE  item that was !!

Well anyways, theres hope as long as there’s naush.  And there’s naush as long as my garage can take it. I have found a fantastic service here, where once you leave your past treasure to them, they then donate a whole lota that stuff at the labour (worker’s) camp. Thats a blessing indeed. To think of it,  what seems so useless or old to us, could very much be an essential a fellow has been saving hard to buy. Serves both purposes.

Ok, So going back to my story, I find this lamp shade, which is definetly designer, going by the beautiful finish and gorgeous material used. I was lost for ideas for sometime but waited for the inspiration, until, Bilal told me that he needed to give a small token of appreciation-kinda gift to one of the senior girls in his school who had helped him out initially. This girl is graduating. Voila .. A DOOR HANGER ? A Placard ? or maybe both …

The lampshade was made of a beaded silk fabric which was stiched to this almost-plastic brown carboardish base. It was perfect to serve the purpose.

The butterfly symbolizes the free spirit in a person to dream, to achieve. The two flowers are the two hearts that will be one, one day and ofcourse the beautiful metallic key is determination which is the key to any sucess. I love this quote and hold on to it dearly. What better way to inspire ???

Altered Cookie Tin ~ Tiny Treasures

Although the first one of these that I had made was for my best friends 4th baby boy !  I liked it enough to make another one similar to it.  The one I gave my friend had a blue base. This one of course has a pink base. I had it packed with new born baby goodies, moisturizer, oil, powder and a couple of napkins. It can be used later on as a baby keepsake. Baby tooth, special dresses, tiny mittens, etc, hence tiny treasures.

All papers used in this project are handmade paper. I completly fell in love with this new ribbon in pink and green. Just wish I’d picked more of it !

Handmade Greeting Card

Generally I dont play with a black based card, for what ever reason, i feel uncomfortable thinking, who’s going to want to buy a black based card ?? But I was tempted and I am reasonably happy with the outcome. However Unfortunetly I feel my photograph has not done justice to the look of the card.

Experimenting with black taught me thats its one of the most versatile colors that lets you run any wild color along with it, and it will calm its loud effect. Its like clothes, you can thrown on, a pair of black trousers, and just about any shirt will gel well with it !

Hope you enjoy this card. It has a senti ring to it for special friends.

A Devastating Lesson for Parents.

Benjamin Spock was my bible when Bilal was born , I followed every word to the T !  Becoming parents does not come naturally especially when we live in a nuclear family without having a family support system around to advise us not to mention how even people who have stayed in a community, dont even know who their immediate neighbours are !

Alot many lessons are learnt the hard way. Today I can recognize the difference between a sinus and a viral infection. But I learnt it the hard way. I know exactly the symptoms of a salmonella infection ~ unfortunately it came at the price of a horrible experience.  I know what combination of foods can cause an allergy in my boys and what is the medication I need for them. Every child is different and I know what works for my boys by experience.

For the ten plus years that I have been a mom, often we get into our routine of how and what to expect. This part of the world is relatively safe. We worry about the driving but where do you not ??? Beside that, we never really worry about holding the shopping trolley constantly while shopping, lest someone just picks up and takes off with our little bundle of joy.  Infact most of us are reminded to carry our handbags or purses on ourselves rather than just leaving it in the shopping carts …  thats how safe it is.  Infact where else could you find a cleaner who’s salary is dhs 700, finding and returning a bag with dhs 55,000 !!!!! But of course thats not always the case. There are the occasional episodes of burglaries generally done by groups or gangs which have come to Dubai for a short period just to carry out a dozen or so, such burglaries and vamooz !!

Sometimes, we as parents get a wake up call, sometimes a jolt and sometimes sheer shock by some of the unfortunate events that take place around children. I can think up of a few after which I had suddenly turned very vigilant around the kids.

1.  It was one of the most gruesome things I had ever heard. The flight from Dubai to New Delhi had landed, a mother and her young daughter were hurrying down the escalator to the immigration counter, what happened next is so shocking. Somehow the platform on which the young girl was standing on, broke and she began to fall in, within seconds, the child was being pressed by the people behind and machinery. I remember not wanting to read the entire article in the newpaper becoz it broke my heart, to think that the mother had to watch how her precious little one was being sliced and minced. It is awful for a mother or any parent to have to witness such a way to loose their child. Ofcourse the goof up  lay in the faulty escalator which had not been repaired and whats worse ? Passengers were allowed to use it !!! Did New Delhi Airport Authorities accept their mistake ? I doubt… But who’s loss was it ? Ours … the parents.

Lesson learnt : We have to keep yelling at the kids to keep up with us and not run around. Especially Sawaab, since he has this thing for running on escalators.    When they were younger, I made sure I held their hands tightly but now I have again become careless, letting them go up and down at Mall of the Emirates, food court. ok, point noted, I have reminded myself that I have to be more vigilant.

2. When such an incident happens closer to the house, the victim has a face and that can be traumatic. When we were staying at Abdullah Shaibani building, this was an incident where a 6 – 7 year old jovial boy called Yousef, was playing football with his friends in the school ground. The school was Chouefat School in Dubai. Unfortunetly the buses were parked within the  premises of the school. The child went to fetch the ball which had gone under one of the buses and at that very moment the bus driver started the bus. Apparently the bus went over the chest of the child. He died shortly after.

I clearly remember, sitting in shock after I heard what had happened. This child was my immediate neighbour. I had seen him several times. He had a younger brother and sister as sweet as angels. I remember the stream of visitors that the family had for days together and as much as I wanted to,  I could not gather the courage to approach the mother for months. I felt too devastated to. I feared it was me, who would burst out crying becoz I am the week one. The mother was inconsolent. What can you tell a mother, who has lost her little son all for the silly mistake of a fool !!!  A Child becomes a part of our body, almost like a limb. Her loss was so immense that I remember just praying for her for months together.  She must have been so devastated. She never woke up from the nightmare ,  She was now living the nightmare.  I remember Samie telling me one day that yousef’s father had told him that they were happy for yousef becoz they knew he was in Paradise. They had found a way to live on. Months later the mother and I became good friends.  Yousef is an angel and he is one of God’s own chosen ones.

3. Just recently about how a 4 1/2  year old child was forgotten in the back seat of a school bus in the morning becoz she slept off. The driver dropped all the other kids and later parked the bus and left to return after 3 hours to find the child lifeless. She died due to heat. How do such things happen, why do such things happen ? We as parents are the ones who pay the price. Our children are soo so important. And inspite of taking all or most, of the precautions,  tragedy happens.

Lesson Learnt : To make sure the authorities take transportation seriously and ensure the safety of every child. I dont know how was it possible that an attendant was not in the bus while the kids were being dropped over to the school !!

4. A few years back, a father was leaving for work in the morning in his four wheel, the mother rushed into the villa to fetch something without realizing that she had left her 3 year old child unattended at the gate of the house. The child must have approached the car and without realizing the father put the car in reverse only to crush the child. ( This was a time when reverse alert systems had not been introduced. )  What pain and agony he will suffer all his life ? The child was too tiny to spoted in his rear view mirror and having the windows up and airconditioning switched on just meant he could’nt hear her screams and most importantly, it happened all too suddenly in a flash !

Lesson learnt : Get down the car to make sure the kids are either in seats with seat belts or make sure they are secure at home.

5-This incident had been narrated by my husband to me, about how two young brothers were playing cops and robbers in one of the villages in India. ( People can have licensed or even unlicensed guns in their homes in small towns for protection from Bandits, dacoits etc ) The boys found the real guns and were excieted, while one of the guns was devoid of bullets, the other was loaded and did not have a safety latch to it. What happened next was inevitable. The young boy took an aim and hit his brother straight on his head. It is a hit that probably traumatised him forever.

6-In 1999, we stayed in Abu Dhabi for 11 months. Bilal was just 8months when we moved there. In those days, Abu Dhabi had plenty of skyscappers.  One of the most frequently heard stories was about how accidently children fell from balconies or windows by mistake and carelessness.

I know there are scores of sick people out there in the world who deliberatly do nasty things to little children but these were just some incidents that were mistakes. They should’ave never happened. They could have been easily avoided. Someone somewhere made a mistake but we as parents bore the brunt. These tragedies changed our lives forever.   We were the loosers. We lost our precious child. I know each parent must’ ave asked himself,    “Why me, Why my son/daughter ?

How can we go on in life without him/ her. Life can’t move any further. Its over. There is nothing left worth fighting for.  Nothing feels right, nothing feels close to good. where is my child ? Just one more hug .. just one more kiss ..

There were so many things I wanted to tell him, so many experiences I wanted to share, so much laughter we have been stolen of.  Why cant things be like before ?

It is such a devastating loss. Nothing and no amount of time can heal the pain.  The loss is ALIVE constantly even when we carry on our lives like a robot …  the pain is still hurting.

Please wake up  parents.  Please realize how fragile life is for our young one.

I hope you use some of these incidents to wake up and check your ownself if all the precautions have been taken.

In a later post I might want to share with you’ll about the mishaps that happened with my kids.

Till then … be safe and keep them safe.

Splash In Dubai

Yesterday was a promised kept Day !  We took the kids out to Dreamland AquaPark.  This ” Date” has been lingering on for almost more than 2 months. It was a funfilled adventure trip with the kids trying out each water ride for 3 – 4 times.  Laughter, excietment and happiness that a parent sees on his child’s face can make all the trouble seem so trivial.

The boys could’nt have enough of the water or the water rides … A picture speaks a thousand words so I’ll let the pictures speak for itself.

A little humor : from the horse’s mouth.

thotherhalfA husband was sitting quietly reading his paper one morning, peacefully enjoying himself, when his wife sneaks up behind him and whacks him on the back of his head with a huge frying pan.

MAN: “What was that for?”
WIFE: “What was that piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name Marylou written on it?”
MAN: “Oh honey, remember two weeks ago when I went to the horse races? Marylou was the name of one of the horses I bet on.”

The wife looked all satisfied, apologizes, and goes off to do work around the house.

Three days later he is once again sitting in his chair reading and she repeats the frying pan swatting.

MAN: “What the hell was that for this time?”
WIFE: “Your horse is on the phone”

Greeting Card In A Frame.

Its been after along time that I did a frame work for one of my neighbours, who wanted a card- in-a- frame format for her husband.

When a customer comes for such personalized work for someone so intimate, I feel I have to have some insight into the person concerned, say for instance, how old is he/she turning, what colors do they like, what temperament do they have ~ social or reclusive,  what hobbies do they enjoy, so as to incorporate a theme around some of these things, but most of the time, people really just want “ANYTHING” special without really wanting to part with any details. In this case I guessed alot to get a feel of whom I was doing the frame for.

I dont know the gentleman well enough but It was really difficult having to guess their likes and feelings when you dont really know the kinda relationship they share, what tastes they have in art etc etc.

Its a beautiful english green frame

Its a beautiful english green frame

There is really very little one can adorn the frame with 1 becoz I didn’t find a shadow frame and 2 becoz I didn’t know what hobbies he had, so I decided to use the lyrics as the base and fill it up in boxes and apertures to make it look elegant.

I have divided the frame into three main parts, the upper left one, the upper right one and the center lower area.  I concentrated on what message was going out rather than the embellishments. He would naturally be seeing this frame at all odd hours and most importantly it had to reflect how the sender felt all these years, apparently they had been married for 27 years.

Green frame is a difficult color to work with especially since I had to change the base of the frame nearly 4 times. I wanted the base to be brighter so that I could then add the ” patchwork ” in contrast colors. I think the effort was well worth it, she was completly overwhelmed. I suppose I wrote her mind .. .. ..
