Tutorial on Home Craft show organization and preparation.

I hope this article benefits some or any of you who are planning on setting up a craft sale in your home. Its about my preparation and the arrangements to be made before the actual day.

Ok, so its that time of the year, when I generally start my summer craft workshop. In addition to that, I will be organizing a home show for all my craft products which include :

  • Handmade greeting cards
  • Art and Craft Kits
  • Scrapbooking stickers
  • Altered Frames and wall hangings.
  • Altered tins, door hangers etc
  • Craft embellishments.
  • I have 3 times more cards which need to be placed with envelopes in cellophane !!

These are just the main items, ofcourse there are plenty more in the sub category.  for example, the craft embellishments include,

As you can see, my work station1 is completly a hill site full of colorful embellies.

  • foam
  • fabric
  • ceramic
  • metal
  • glass
  • wood
Here they are all just mixed in the larger packets which first have to be sorted into different categories. These are the altered clothespin with woodsies attached to them. I have a huge pile of these to sell too. Anyone interested ?

  •

Further more there are different shapes like, hearts, stars, flowers, critters, butterflies, oceanic, baby related and so many many more. Here I have somehow managed to fill 4 different boxes categorizing woodsies, clothespins, baby embellies and fabric flowers/butterflies. There are some more smaller boxes which I could not fit in the pic.

trying to keep some focus and make some sense of all the chaos .. .
Being methodical can be time consuming and painful but in the end, you stand to gain alot from it. I am a perfectionist and always need to see things arranged in clusters, groups, with tags, in packets etc. Ofcourse, I will be putting up my 200 different types of ribbons as well. And my handmade papers too. However I have just one week at hand and a H U G E task ahead of me in this short time.

Here are the few main tasks at hand :
  • Preparing the product for selling
  • All the cards have to be placed in celophane with coordinated envelopes.
  • Price tags with store labels.
  • Stickers sorted in different categories and price tagged
  • Door hangers, wall hangings and altered arts wrapped, sealed and price tagged.
  • Plastic carry bagsCalculator, cash for change, pen, receipt pad, business cards
  • Prepare the cork board for sample display sets.

Ok, so some progress is taking place. Placing here are some envelopes coordinating with the card colors.

My newer wall hangings, door hangers, placards, and bookmarks ~ waiting to be wrapped and dressed. All the embellishments, packed, tagged, and priced. Hanging for now in a make shift display.

All the embellishments, packed, tagged, and priced. Hanging for now in a make shift display. Eventually all the embellishments are going to look like this.

Note: The tags on my embellishment packets were designed by me on my last trip to India. Very early on, I realized that its always important to market your products well. Hence these tags are printed front and back and I just punched a tiny hole so as to let them hang on the wire rack.

I know the picture quality is not good but I think you get the “picture” :)

 Display organization

I can never emphasis enough how important, a display really is. Probably the reason why, big stores hire a proper merchandiser just to enhance the visual effect of a display. It is necessary that the display looks uncluttered, organized, has easy access, and is attractive. No matter how brilliant a product is, if the display does not grab your attention, no one is really going to want to pick that item up, leave aside buying it.

  • Invest in a good simple fabric to cover your display area or table. Please remember dont use a printed sheet, lest it distract the buyer.
  • Give them ample of space to move around. If possible try to use the wall to hang items which can be hung.
  • Another thing, make sure, you have ample of lighting in the room and if not, try to find spot lights or lamps which can light up dark corners and focus on the item.

Here’s a list of the things I need to prepare for

  • Get the display items out of the shed, clean the 2 metal racks, 2 foldable white tables,
  • paint the wheeled rack in the courtyard,
  • Ready the 3 table top racks
  • Find the small table top easels from the shed.
  • Get the special runners (for fairs) for dinning table
  • Gathering all the baskets for keeping the embellishments
  • This wheelie wire display is desperate for a coat of some fresh paint. There’s the table wire rack that I was talking about.

And there’s the 1+2 portable tables for display.

This is my shed. Completly stacked to the brim with my exhibition/fair stuff. Except for the blue floor sofa, its all MY STUFF !!

Decoration

  • Prepare the Doodle Buddies Banner/Bunting with fabric
  • street signs poster
  • This bunting, I prepared last night. Ofcourse, this is not complete. I am preparing an entire tutorial for this which I will upload soon.

  • Facebook list on Naush and Doodlebuddies
  • Emailing list
  • Arte List
  • social club friends, or coffee morning bunch.
  • Making digital poster as well hard copy of the poster for Le Marshe, Spinneys, Lakes, Shop and Sell.
  •
Ofcourse, I have kept the message clear with no fancy fonts. This is my flyer.

    Menu Planning

Keeping some light refreshments and snacks, serves two purposes. Not only is it courteous to keep something at hand to serve in this horendous heat but it also helps in keeping people over for longer while they munch something.

Dont forget, some very special friendships of like minded people can form thru such events. I know, I have met some extraordinary people thru these meetings so dont be shy to open up, speak up and talk about your art. I always look forward to exhibitions like these, becoz there is nothing better than to bump into someone who is always designing similar things like me and so, faces the same issues like myself.

Although this may not look like alot, its best not to leave anything for 2 days before the show. So the adverts, have to be out ASAP !! People need to plan their weekend and see how they can fit a little shopping at Doodle Buddies in their schedule so its best they are invited much in advance.

So far only the banner is done and looks awesome, if I may say so myself. Not even 1/3 of the cards have found their way into the cellophanes :(   The embellishments need a lot of organizational work. At this point, if you can get someone to help out a bit. That would be great. A close friend, a good available neighbour, naturally the husband if he is willing. In my case, my kids are a huge help and support. And my hubby is like a backbone to the whole episode.

Although I have a very large courtyard/garden, due to the incredibly hot temperature, I will be keeping the show in the lounge room which means alot of reshuffling of the furniture to accomodate the show racks and keeping some space for movement at the same time.

I have managed to click and add a few photos to give you a brief idea of what I have in my plates !!

I hope you enjoy these pictures and please remember, this is my situation with the loads etc, but its not necessary that everyone HAS to unload an entire shed to get things out !! A little bit of organizational skills will help you tremendously in keeping prepared for the big day. Becoz you are the best judge of how your rooms look and how you can arrange your room to accomodate your products, you would have to have a vague picture in your mind of approximately how you want things placed. Inspite of all the best of the preparations, things do tend to go wrong at the last minute but atleast with a list of things in hand, you are overcoming a large part of if and how things can fall apart.

I have some more pointers about what kind of snacks to provide for the show in a climate like the one, we are experienceing right now, but I will keep that and a whole lot of more things for my next post, since this post has got so long already.

I hope you enjoyed your stay at Creative Mom in Dubai & Doodle Buddies. I hope you found some solutions, some ideas and found some inspiration to try out a long awaiting fair too. Please write to me if you found my article inspiring.

Thank you for stopping by.

Care for some tea ……. bags ?

Samie is not an ardent tea lover, but he has his morning tea to wash down some of his toast. Inspite of loading a large amount of earl grey’s and lemon tea’s while he had first been diagnosed with Carcinoma, all of them rest as medicinal or exotic teas, sitting happily in the snack bar ! So back to Lipton, it is. However, what I have been enjoying lately is the bonus pleasure that lipton is providing to its end user .. not the consumer, in this case. .. yes, their little quizes to check how intelligent the female folks are who prepare tea for their husbands or have they turned into complete numb nuts. Have a go at some of these optical illusions and quizes.

Have started collecting them to make a quiz pocket note book for the boys, that is, when I have atleast a dozen of so, becoz many of them are also in arabic.

Enjoy :

A Wise Gardener.

A little boy went into a store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits. The store owner observed and listened to the conversation.

The boy asked, “Maam, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?” The woman replied, “I already have someone to cut my lawn.”

“I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.” replied the boy. The woman responded that she was very satisfied with the person who was presently cutting her lawn.

The little boy was even more perseverant and said, “I’ll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach, Florida.” Again the woman answered in the negative.

With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver.

The store owner, who was listening to this conversation, walked over to the boy and said, “Son… I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.”

The little boy replied, “No thanks, I was just checking my performance on the job I already have. I am the one who is working for the lady I was talking to!”

Some of my newest designed greeting cards.

The new designs.

The new designs.

Recently I bumbed into a site which gave me alot of creative inspiration. I realized how easy designing cards get when the sketch is provided. Such site pose challenges to us so that we can come up with spectacular colors, patterns and designs based on their sketches. I have decided to play atleast one or two of them now on !!

The site is called. www.mojomonday.blogspot.com

I will continue to post healthy wholesome funny and thoughtful stuffies here but this will be my last post on CreativeMominDubai for greeting cards. These cards were done alittle after we returned from Umrah in saudi arabia. I am very content with the colors and the looks of tall these cards. What say you ???

‘ll keep you’ll updated with the progress I make or even better, visit me at DoodleBuddies.wordpress.com to see my progress for yourselves.

Salt Play ~ Therapy & Fun

honest results visible : ' this ' by sawaab

honest results visible : ' this ' by sawaab

Last week sam was in Libya, Algeria etc and that really left us feeling abit low. I have let the kids completly enjoy the  initial outlet, the kids desperately wanted after the exams, last two to three weeks and now it has started to fade off. They are getting restless and need some form of constructive routine. As such we have been sleeping at the wee hours of the night/morning and having breakfast at lunch !!

Playstation ~ computer games and Cartoons are the only agendas in their lives at the moment.  These kids have really had to bury their heads in alot many books this year and thats why I felt it was ok to let them just “Chill out”.

Hopefully they will be getting into a better schedule with activities and sports shortly. Till then, I am going to relax too.

Last week, we played with salt. The boys not only made signs and alphabets but they also enjoyed making things with it. I could see sawaab making improvements in his spelling, but unfortunetly there was little to no progress in Eman’s case, it saddened me to see, how desperately he tried and kept trying. There is immense zest in this little fellow to “try” and try he does only he constantly looks at my face for reactions.  He excels with just a little encouragement but perhaps I am the one who really needs to practise more patience with him.

All you need is a large tray, some salt and a few pieces like twigs, combs or plastic knives. It adds a whole lot of fun to an afternoon.

Hopefully we will be making salt dough tomorrow, and thats a whole new dimension of fun and experimentation.

A birthday gift ~ book fan

There are people who indulge in chocolate binging or cookies or even ice cream, when they have an anxiety attack or depression. In my case, I use it to as an excuse to shop !! Oh yeah, but I’m sensible, I would almost never spend on clothes and stuff, my spending is limited to craft supplies or books or decoration or stuff like that .. art related.  (which in truth is as bad if not worse !! )

For almost the past two weeks, We have been confined to the house with studies and more studies, it seems life has almost seized to exist apart from that chore. So yesterday, I took the kids to this huge book fair at the Dubai Airport Expo ! Lo and behold, the place was a books paradise. Books on just about everything and most importantly “C R A F T S !!  Which is somehow difficult to find in Dubai.  Books on rubberstamping, glass painting , collage, mosiac, quilling etc. Very rarely, do we Oh, I could’nt believe my eyes. We completly got lost in the mountains of books on discounted prices. Perhaps I did go a wee bit overboard … OK So I admit, I went completly bonkers !!! I went greedy and selfish and drooled all the way !!!!!!!  Hey wait a minute, but I did buy the kids two books each ! Ok so they had to haggle with me a whole lot to get it till there. But what was I expecting, I’ll take the boys to a books paradise and they will come away without requesting (crying, being stubborn and may be even threatening ) for even one book ??

In the end we had 29 books and paid a load !!

And inspite of all the gloom and doom I felt till last morning, I realized I was feeling much better, but a little guilty  when I started unpacking my precious treasures after the shopping.   Already I saw so many projects, which I am just ready to hit out at. Oh but ofcourse, am just going to wait for Bilal’s exams to get over first.

I suppose it is like therapy.  Anyways, so I decided to call it MY Birthday Present. From me to me. Its another thing that my birthday’s atleast 2 months ahead ! And perhaps till then there will be quite a few crafty tools that would get into that list of ” Birthday Gift from Me to Me ”

Decluttering Part 2. Craft Room In Disorderly Order.

The art studio has been buzzing with activity finally over the past THREE weeks !! Although the idea was to complete the organizing bit by making the labels for all the boxes, my impatience  got the better of me. I’ve done almost 12 beautiful pieces of art, not to mention the try outs which have found refuge in the dust bin ! Ofcourse the table has gone mad again with piles of bits of paper cuttings and tools scattered everywhere. How I get work done in the mess .. well . .. . . . . . IT IS an art !!

scissors

scissors

These are the scissors that I frequently use. There are two more racks with scissors, which I rarely ever use. Thing with scissors is :

  • Place them in a way that displays their design side so that you dont pull out a dozen scissors before finding the one you intended to.
  • Place them in an easily accessible area close to the work station.

ALTERED TIN ART 095

At any given time, before I call it a day, here are a few pointers to what I do, inorder to stay focused because like most of you’ll, I too, cannot function when the cuttings get out of control.

  1. Put back all dies in the folders.
  2. Wash all soiled rubberstamps and keep them for drying on a dry napkin
  3. Gather all the paper cuttings in one area. so that although its still on the table its not E V E R Y W H E R E .
  4. Clear up the guillotine tray.
  5. Throw in the double sided glue strips in an airtight container lest they dry off and loose its strength.
  6. Last but not least, place all the new productions in a drawer or container so that they the glue adheres in a dry area.
  7. One thing I have realized is that I take out too many embellishments to ” try out”, when I decide It does not fit in, I just leave it there somewhere. I have lost one too many embellishments this way, so now I gather all such embellishments and keep them in a tiny box, end of my creative spree,  I quickly push back everything in their respective containers.

This all must seem like alot but really it just takes a little over 15 minutes !!

More scissors !

Ribbons : although I have 5 wire baskets full of ribbons, I am yet to organize them. Hey, its alot of hard work !

I find placing ribbons in an open container like the wire crates very convenient, since I am a compulsive ribbon feeder, its nice to have “out in the open” rather than otherwise. I have tried several other options, but this suits me best.

This organizer makes locating tiny beads or brads so easy. It is efficient and handy.   large enough to carry a big variety and small enough so as to be placed on a table top or shelf.
