Mission : Declutter and Organize Boys Room.

Hello Friends, And how have we all been the past month of May ? This post was supposed to be out atleast 4 weeks back but I’ve had plenty on my plate, but becoz I am alittle unwell and put on bed rest, I am able to get the post out.

Now for those of you’ll who have been following my blogs, you already know, that atleast twice a year, I declutter the boys room. There are piles of toys which the boys have grown out off and some just did not survive the wear and tear of the Samama Clan and yet other toys have found places in the boys’ friends homes.

Anyways, after the garage sale, it took, nearly an entire weekend to get the boys’ room back to alittle bit of sense. We decided to reorganize the furniture which meant moving all the beds and the toy racks. It took nearly 4-5 tries before which all of us were satisfied with the end result.  I am leaving a slide here to show you exactly how much of a task it was this time. I look forward to your comments.

One thing I have often noticed between couples, is that, women generally like to take charge of where to place what in the house. But to all the women out there, just two tiny advice.

1. Instead of breaking off in a fight, just let the set up go as your partner likes, sleep over it. Any change, takes time, to grow on us. Initially alot of things dont suit us, however later we realize, it was an ideal decision.

2. Inspite giving the said setup, some time to dwell, if you persistently dislike the placing or set up, then you can bring your view forward in an amicable way. Dont rush it and dont get him defensive ~ neither will help. And you can only be happy if both of you are happy.

Although I am not 100% satisfied with the setup of the beds in this position, I am trying to look at things from my spouce’s point of view and perhaps, it might seem odd initially but lets wait and see how it goes. The paint job has not yet started but I was too excieted so I wanted to share this with you’ll. Meanwhile, both of us are happy and most importantly, the three little men in our household are very excieted too.

Bye Bye for now. Thank you for visiting. Dont forget to visit www.doodlebuddies.wordpress.com/ before you leave.

Altered Cookie Tin ~ Tiny Treasures

Although the first one of these that I had made was for my best friends 4th baby boy !  I liked it enough to make another one similar to it.  The one I gave my friend had a blue base. This one of course has a pink base. I had it packed with new born baby goodies, moisturizer, oil, powder and a couple of napkins. It can be used later on as a baby keepsake. Baby tooth, special dresses, tiny mittens, etc, hence tiny treasures.

All papers used in this project are handmade paper. I completly fell in love with this new ribbon in pink and green. Just wish I’d picked more of it !

Decluttering Part 2. Craft Room In Disorderly Order.

The art studio has been buzzing with activity finally over the past THREE weeks !! Although the idea was to complete the organizing bit by making the labels for all the boxes, my impatience  got the better of me. I’ve done almost 12 beautiful pieces of art, not to mention the try outs which have found refuge in the dust bin ! Ofcourse the table has gone mad again with piles of bits of paper cuttings and tools scattered everywhere. How I get work done in the mess .. well . .. . . . . . IT IS an art !!

scissors

scissors

These are the scissors that I frequently use. There are two more racks with scissors, which I rarely ever use. Thing with scissors is :

  • Place them in a way that displays their design side so that you dont pull out a dozen scissors before finding the one you intended to.
  • Place them in an easily accessible area close to the work station.

ALTERED TIN ART 095

At any given time, before I call it a day, here are a few pointers to what I do, inorder to stay focused because like most of you’ll, I too, cannot function when the cuttings get out of control.

  1. Put back all dies in the folders.
  2. Wash all soiled rubberstamps and keep them for drying on a dry napkin
  3. Gather all the paper cuttings in one area. so that although its still on the table its not E V E R Y W H E R E .
  4. Clear up the guillotine tray.
  5. Throw in the double sided glue strips in an airtight container lest they dry off and loose its strength.
  6. Last but not least, place all the new productions in a drawer or container so that they the glue adheres in a dry area.
  7. One thing I have realized is that I take out too many embellishments to ” try out”, when I decide It does not fit in, I just leave it there somewhere. I have lost one too many embellishments this way, so now I gather all such embellishments and keep them in a tiny box, end of my creative spree,  I quickly push back everything in their respective containers.

This all must seem like alot but really it just takes a little over 15 minutes !!

Ribbons : although I have 5 wire baskets full of ribbons, I am yet to organize them. Hey, its alot of hard work !

I find placing ribbons in an open container like the wire crates very convenient, since I am a compulsive ribbon feeder, its nice to have “out in the open” rather than otherwise. I have tried several other options, but this suits me best.

This organizer makes locating tiny beads or brads so easy. It is efficient and handy.   large enough to carry a big variety and small enough so as to be placed on a table top or shelf.

The Boys Room.

The toughest part about cleaning up a room is …………” to maintain that cleanliness.” ” THAT” is an enormous task.

The boys room seems to be looking somewhat presentable still. I know every time I pass by the room, I can hear a loud thud and running about, assuming the boys are quickly gathering up their precious junk treasures from the floor, carpet, tables and almost every possible corner of the room. Still, I must say, its not too bad. Occasionally I’ll spot a bunch of clothes lying around in the corner behind the bunk bed and “YES” COMPLETLY  LOOSE IT ON THE BOYS !

I have a major problem with clothes on the  floor. It just ticks me off very badly. Here is a photo I took last week. Must say it hasnt been the same but its not too bad either.

Makeovers

If there is one thing that I LOVE to watch on the net, its gotta be makeovers ,, room makeovers, art project makeovers, pieces of furniture makeovers, things like that.  There’s a strange kind of excietment I feel just before going to the “After” picture. The pictures itself are so inspiring. One link I have found recently is :

    http://www.designspongeonline.com

I mean they come up with such creative ways to enhance old pieces of furniture or random crockery and stuff. Now these are things that really have me wanting to try something new as well. I will keep adding new links if and as I find them.

Hurricane hit samama mansion first floor !

Hurricane hit samama mansion first floor !

Ofcourse the boys room is not very large but can easily accomodate the bunk beds and the car bed which has an additional bed underneath which can easily be slid open for sleepovers.  This is the state of the room every 15th day and then again, we go back to ” Mom hiting the ceiling and with screams that can be heard long past the ranches, the boys are forced into the clean up session.  Am I a MEAN mom ?? ABSOLUTELY !

The car bed is Bilal’s. and quite easily and conveniently the toys slid pass into those on the floor or around his bed !! Ofcourse no one is to be blamed .. ” I did’nt do it ”  my kids play fair. They dont like their siblings bearing the wrath from their mother, so no name blaming just “I dont know who did it !!!! Well it stays that way or I just call the firefighters to save the boys from me.

Pile of toys

There are two Ikea racks placed on either side of the room and in parallel, there are two beds as well. These racks house the stacks and stacks of baskets, bins, buckets and trays of goody, delicious toys. Have you seen a room this flooded with Toys ??

AND NOW FOR THE MAKE OVER OR RATHER TRANSFORMATION OF TOY LAND INTO A WALKABLE SPACE !!!!!!!

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE MAKEOVER :

It took nearly 3 weeks of intensive cleaning up during which the boys were completly fed up of “Go and clean up your room” line.

We dumped almost 6 TV CARTONS of toys for Charity ! which I am so relieved off .. Phew !

We have still got 3 cartons of toys in the shed which I will give them every month if they decide to get rid of more toys.

There are nearly 11 brand new remote control cars, given at several birthdays to them by my dad and sister which are also sitting in the shed.

This story was not for the faint of the heart. My Boys are real fighters !

UNBELIEVABLE !
UNBELIEVABLE !

can you believe this ?? This is the same wall which has Bilal’s car bed !! Well, its not great but its a great start, especially since the boys have achieved all this mainly on their own efforts, ofcourse I was sitting a sipping my coffee at one of the only empty corners of the room, with a fly swatter in my hands ! Well, it worked, did’nt it ??!

Bilal's wall

He is an 8 1/2 year old who has his heart set on action figures, race cars, gun machines and building blocks. What do you think he’ll be when he grows up ?

A machineist ? Nah !

A technician ? Nah !

A scientist ?  Nah !

Silly you, almost every child these days like almost all of those toys. Its natural. He’ll be what he intends to be. A good human being with alot of talent and a solid gold heart, inshallah.

A child's fantasy land

A child's fantasy land

No amount of toys can replace a childs imagination.  He still lives in a large and beautiful fantasy world .. ok so thats not Bilal’s world. Bilal’s world is about rescuing a fairy princess from bad military goons with a machine gun and medival sword. Actually I relive my childhood thru my boys toys. These pink castles are actually mine. they are so special to me. I am a dreamer just like Bilal those pink homes represent fond memories from my childhood where we could’nt afford those.

Get organized ~ Beat the clutter ~ A shed in need : a shed indeed.

Like I said earlier, this year has to be about setting right our priorties, getting organized, and working around it to achieve the goals  .. No not trying. Trying almost makes it sound like an excuse even before making the effort. So with the Study  ” a  l   m   o   s   t ” done with the new shelves and new paper holder shelves, Samie ordered for the new Larger shed from Interplast. Now not only is this larger, it is 10″ x 8″, it is far more expensive too, but the silver lining is that they aggreed to have it installed the very next day !!!!!! Wow, could’nt have asked for more better news. So the boys came on thursday and have done a pretty neat job. check it out :

Finally its here .. ..

Finally its here .. ..

For all those of you who think, the second shed could have been avoided, plz look further :

no derth of stuff in our courtyard !

Now you know why the 2nd shed was a"MUST"

In the making..

In the making..

Saturday night we started out with the spring cleaning. It seemed like it took forever, but after heaps and heaps of stuff had been disposed .. I actually felt so redeemed !!!!!!! It really felt good although I was bone tired. Sam did all the hard work while I just kept guiding him what to place where. It’s always fantastic team work between the both of us ..

Still we have a pile of toy boxes and cartons that need to be filtered before I pack some into the shed. Well thats for another week end or maybe even a week day. With that off our backs, we’ll now start re-organizing the furniture in the courtyard.

Both of us deserve a well earned pat on the back !
